The Suns are on Fire
...But not in a good way. Recently, the Phoenix Suns went through a rebranding that replaced purple with black, changed the typography and some other updates. Personally, I'm not a fan of it.
They did a good job of simplifying with the solid background and removing the unnecessary shadows on the ball, type and parallelogram shape. I also don't mind the updated type but I don't like the rendering effect on the word "SUNS". The biggest problem they didn't address is the sun ball. It feels like cheap clip art.
The update to the alternative mark might be worse. Despite the simplistic approach, it looks like a bomb went off inside the S.
This is probably the biggest win of the rebranding but really not much changed. Black replaced the purple in the ball, the type got a facelift but again, I'm not a fan of the extruding effect.
Too much going on in the updated version. I would prefer to see just solid orange...or purple or black for that matter.
